Blackheads are tiny projections of black skin that are often found on the face especially on the nose and sometimes on the back.
Such black projections form a barrier that blocks the skin’s sebaceous glands.
They are caused by excessive development of “sebum” (an oily substance) from the sebaceous gland which, when combined with dead skin and bacteria, gradually become hardened.
From the air the sebum becomes exposed to oxygen and becomes oxidized, turning black.
Here are the main causes leading to blackheads:
- Stress
- Hormonal changes
- Inheritance
- Unclean skin
- Cosmetics
- Smoking
- Alcohol
- Caffeine
